38-Hour Course

38-Hour Course

The office of motor vehicles requires students to acquire the temporary instructional permit (tip) in order to have the louisiana written driving test administered and participate in behind-the-wheel training.

*Driving skills test is a separate registration upon successful course completion

  • This is a 3-Tier System developed by the State of Louisiana for promotion of safer teen drivers.

  • Driver Education Class is a 38-Hour Course for teens ages 14 years and 9 months old to 17 years old. This course is for issuance of their permit and introduction to the Intermediate License tier and then to a full license at age 17. Most students obtain an insurance savings (sometimes up to 20%) and some schools issue quality credit, part of it toward graduation.

  • Students must attend 30-hours in the classroom and, upon completion with a 80% or greater, participate in 8-hours behind-the-wheel, one-on-one with a certified driving instructor.

  • While on the 6 month permit, a student must keep a log of actual hours driven totaling 50 hours with 15 of those hours being at night. We provide parents with a form to log student's permit hours Behind-the-Wheel for OMV. Parents will need to present the driver's log along with other documentation to obtain their student's intermediate license.

  • Students must drive with a licensed adult, parent, or sibling over the age of 18 while on their permit with a curfew between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. After the 6 months on the required permit, parents can return to OMV with the student to receive an Intermediate License whereby they can drive alone with no curfew but with only one person in the vehicle with them under the age of 18. Then at 17 yrs. old, the student once again returns to OMV to obtain their full license, Class “E”.

Student are picked-up/dropped-off at the ZDA office.
